Greece is made up of islands that has 35 volcanoes but only five are active, based on the Global Volcanism Program database there are four Holocene volcanoes. Two of those volcanoes have been active since 1800 CE but none have been active since 1960 CE and zero have currently erupted. Greece also has seven pleistocene volcanoes.
Although there has not been an eruption in Greece in a very long time, there has been increased activity in the past ten years. They have systems set in play to get monitoring volcanic activity in order to stay updated and give warnings. They have a system called Geo- spatial warning systems Nisyros volcano(Greece). This case study started on December 31,2002. It has been proven when monitoring measurable changes in geophysical and geochemical parameters gives early warnings. The systems job is to have correlations, stimulations, and modeling in a graphically accurate way using real time monitored data in 4D. Mode. Those results will tell warnings of volcanic hazards, pending eruptions, and the possibility of a big earthquake happening. They put their data with satellite images that are transferred and “unified in a coherent way to allow integration into geo-spatial information systems (GIS)).
There is an early warning system and emergency plan set in place and hope to give a public awareness for people to know about.
Hi Rosalinda, great job on your blog post! It was interesting to learn about Greece's early warning system. Giving people sufficient time to prepare and/or evacuate in case of a volcanic eruption is a good way to keep them safe. It's important to monitor geological activity, as frequent earthquakes in an area may lead to a volcanic eruption. My country Chile also has an early warning system in place!
ReplyDeleteThis was a thoughtful volcanic reflection.
ReplyDeleteHello Rosalinda,
ReplyDeleteamazing blog post! I did not know that Greece was made up of islands that have 35 Volcanoes, I found this very interesting especially how only 5 out of 35 are active. My country also has multiple key measures to help mitigate volcanic Hazards like Greece does, they also monitor the geological activity.
